May 1--Sarah Smith knew she didn't fit the corporate mold. She wasn't power-hungry. Office politics bored her. Wearing suits and heels was stifling. Even the drive to work was tedious.
So earlier this month, Smith decided to quit her job at Arcadis Geraghty & Miller, an environmental and engineering services consulting firm with offices in Research Triangle Park. Instead of editing technical reports written by engineers, she would teach Christianity for a year in Peru. Some of her co-workers told her she was crazy to leave a stable job, good money and and benefits to live with a Peruvian family and make nothing.
