NEW ORLEANS -- How low can you go in reducing blood pressure after a patient has had a stroke?

It is still a subject of considerable controversy, but the answer may be lower than previously thought, Dr. Gary Friday said at the 25th International Stroke Conference sponsored by the American Stroke Association.

It is well established that after an initial stroke, diastolic pressures over 90 mm Hg confer a significant increase in risk for subsequent events. The issue is whether it is safe to push the diastolic pressure below 80 mm Hg.
