COLORADO SPRINGS -- The cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors are not "superaspirins," but they are "safer aspirins," Dr. David H. Collier said at the annual meeting of the Colorado chapter of the American College of Physicians--American Society of Internal Medicine.
The selective COX-2 inhibitors celecoxib (Celebrex) and rofecoxib (Vioxx) don't inhibit prostaglandins to any greater extent than other NSAIDs. Thus, their efficacy in osteoarthritis is comparable to that of older agents, according to Dr. Collier, chief of the department of rheumatology at Denver Health Medical Center.
