Men's Studies and Women's Studies: Should They Be Wed?

What is the relationship of men's studies to women's studies? Do they have a future together? These are important questions. However, they are difficult to ask within the walls of academe today, because so many don't understand what men's studies is, and many others don't want to hear anything more of women's studies. Even for some of the "converted" who do employ a gender perspective within their own discipline, it is often felt that we're asking too much to expect them to participate in programs labeled women's or men's studies. Where I live, discipline boundaries are strong, and the politics of gender remain unsettled.
