IN FINE but vague language, John T. Pawlikowski nowhere admits that Pius XII seriously misjudged the significance of the concordat in legitimizing the Third Reich, and that Pius's treatment of the Catholic Center in Germany was deeply disturbing ("Pope Pius XII and the Nazis," Feb. 23). If Pawlikowski doesn't want to accept Oxford don John Cornwall's word on the sinister reality behind these admitted influences, he should read expert Jonathan Sperber's writings.
The sad fact is that Pius was fanatically shutting down all Catholic left-wing critiques and had approved of the church's hostility to the earlier pre-Mussolini Catholic Popular Party that offered the ...
