"[ldots]very puzzling[ldots]"

Al Cribari's remarks about Finger Lakes wines in the March issue were very puzzling, especially in light of the superb Wines & Vines piece in 1997 about the NEW Finger Lakes wine industry.
Mr. Cribari began with a 1970 W&V headline, and at first it seemed as if he was still talking about what the industry was like then. But when I read it a second time, it became clear that he was talking about his perceptions of the industry today--in 2000--with an "I told you so" tone. He criticized the New York State legislature, advocates of vinifera grapes, the industry as a whole, and Cornell's Geneva Experiment ...
