Back in 1996, when David Friedensohn was chief executive of SonicNet Inc., he could look out the window of his NoHo office and watch the drug deals in progress on Crosby Street, a backstreet between Broadway and Lafayette Street where local businesses put out their trash.
The neighborhood was such that the fledgling SonicNet, an on-line music company, even got used to having its computers stolen. One morning, a computer containing the company's marketing data was filched from the desk of a worker who was in the bathroom, just a few steps away.
