Although earlier studies suggested that aprotinin could preserve normal platelet function during cardiopulmonary bypass (CBP) surgery, researchers in Spain report that they found no such effect.
"Bleeding is one of the complications of [CBP] cardiac surgery. A platelet function defect [is thought] to be the main cause of the hemostatic problems associated with CBP," explained J. Mateo and colleagues ("Platelet function during cardiopulmonary bypass not changed by two different doses of aprotinin," Haematologica, 2000;85(4):381-385).
