South Dakota is perhaps best known for its pegmatites, which are so numerous that a close-up view of the presidents on Mount Rushmore shows that their faces are crossed by large and small pegmatite dikes.
South Dakota's mineral localities would be few and very uninteresting without the Black Hills in the extreme western part of the state. The uplift and subsequent erosion of the Black Hills are responsible for the accessibility of South Dakota's abundant and diverse mineral locations. Because much of the Black Hills is National Forest, it is available to the miner, prospector, and collector.
