Grammer's performance doesn't garner cheers from Shakespeare fans.(Arts and Lifestyle)

Audience reaction to Kelsey Grammer's performance in Thursday night's opening of "Macbeth" at the Colonial Theatre ran the gamut from "fantastic" to "awful."

"I thought (Grammer) was a little uneven in his performance," said Pamela Belanger, a theater teacher at Exeter High School in New Hampshire.

But one audience member, who declined to give her name, was less kind, saying of Grammer's performance, "It was painful. I thought it was just awful. (Grammer) better stick to TV."

The Emmy-winning star of NBC's "Frasier" portrays the fiendish Scottish general in William Shakespeare's tale of violent descent into madness.
