Think of Mrs Beeton and the image conjured up is one of a middle-aged, rosy-cheeked, rather stern Victorian matriarch - Mrs Bridges from Upstairs Downstairs, in fact.
In fact, the legendary cookery writer Isabella Beeton (just hearing her first name knocks years off her) was just 29 when she died. It was just days after she'd delivered her fourth son - the end of a sadly short but very productive life, whose most famous gift to the world was Beeton's Book of Household Management.
