May 22--ABOARD THE TEXAS EAGLE--Margie Peak points to a photograph on a yellowed clipping from the San Antonio Express dated Jan. 28, 1948. The woman, immaculately dressed, stands on the stairs leading to the train's observation deck with her two sons.
"My parents and brothers took the first train of tomorrow complete with the dome cars from Austin to San Antonio," Peak said. "I wasn't even born yet."
Later, she would catch rides with her family to Ohio, but those never made the papers.
Still, train rides always have been a part of the family, she says.
