A classic generation of British actors that included Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson and Peggy Ashcroft vanished Sunday with the death in England of Sir John Gielgud.
The 96-year-old actor was known best in the United States for his character parts in films, but he was a legendary figure on the British stage. A theater in the West End is named for him.
"Everybody currently working in the theater will agree that his death brought the end of an era," said Trevor Nunn, director of London's National Theater. "As Shakespeare said, 'There's a great spirit gone."'
