On March 9, HHS Inspector General June Gibbs Brown issued an open letter to providers assuring them of her office's commitment to giving favorable treatment to providers that promptly and voluntarily disclose improper conduct to the government. Acknowledging that potential civil and criminal, penalties for Medicare fraud have been a strong deterrent against self-disclosure, Brown stated that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) may impose less rigorous corporate integrity agreements (CIAs) on providers that show a good-faith compliance effort and establish effective compliance programs.
