ORLANDO, Florida -- Interventional radiology is a growing specialty that encompasses a wide range of vascular and non-vascular procedures, with applications ranging from treatment of atherosclerotic disease to cancer, stroke, infertility, and congenital vascular defects. Procedure volume in interventional radiology (IR) has grown substantially since the field originated in the mid-1970s. As shown in Table 1, total IR procedure volume increased at an average rate of almost 10% per year between 1996 and 1998, and procedures are forecast to increase another 20% by 2005.
