The Clinton administration has announced, for the first time, a rule to require small drinking water systems to install filtration systems to protect against microbial contaminants. The EPA said the rule would apply to water systems serving less than 10,000 persons. It said the action would prevent as many as 83,000 cases per year of waterborne illnesses such as those from cryptosporidium.
EPA noted that cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite found in animal and other organic wastes, is one of several potentially harmful microbes that can contaminate drinking water. It is highly resistant to traditional disinfection treatments, and requires advanced filtration and other ...
