The ancients tell us that Hannibal was a strong and resourceful general. Today's military strategists consider his war against Rome one of greatest ever waged. Since the only texts describing Hannibal and his campaign were written by pro-Roman historians, we have a somewhat biased view of him and the people of Carthage. For this reason, we may never know whether Hannibal was as cruel and heartless as the Romans said. The ancient sources say little about his private life, his personality, or the details of his battles.
