An intrepid balloonist has set off on the last great polar adventure in a mission being co-ordinated from a control centre in Birmingham.
Adventurer David Hempleman-Adams took off from his base in Spitsbergen, Norway, at 5pm yesterday, and aims to fly over the North Pole within the next three days.
He is attempting what many believe is the world's most dangerous balloon flight by flying solo across the Arctic Ocean.
He will experience temperatures as low as -60C (-76F) before landing somewhere in North America.
