Historically, promoting physical fitness has been one of the cornerstones of the physical education profession (McCloy, 1940), and for good reason; as Dotson (1988) stated, "Physical fitness is a state of well-being that allows people to perform daily activities with vigor, reduce [their] risk of health problems, and participate in a variety of physical activities" (p. 26).
