For five years, Barbara Palkoski had such severe hot flashes that she couldn't sleep through the night.
But the 53-year-old Michigan woman was unable to benefit from the most effective known treatment for that problem - estrogen therapy - because doctors feared it could trigger a recurrence of her breast cancer.
So last year, she volunteered to start taking an antidepressant called Effexor as part of an experiment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "Within two to three days, this was the first time I had slept through the night," she said.
