Jean Karl, 72, a children's book publisher who established the Atheneum youth imprint, edited award-winning books and wrote extensively, died Thursday in Lancaster, Pa. She had retired from Atheneum in 1985 but continued to edit books until recently. Her "The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," won the Newbery Medal in 1968. She also edited two Caldecott Medal books, "May I Bring a Friend?" by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, and "A Story, a Story" by Gail E. Haley. Newbery and Caldecott ...
