The Mississippi River is one of the country's most endangered waterways, according to the annual report released Monday by American Rivers, a national environmental group. The study said the Mississippi is threatened by polluted runoff from farms and city streets, by the loss of wetlands and flood-plain forests and by the proposed expansion of locks and dams that would undermine fisheries in some backwater channels.
"Because Minnesota is the headwaters of the Mississippi, we have a special responsibility to protect the river's ecology," said Whitney Clark, executive director of Friends of the Mississippi. "We're not doing our job."
