When Mindy Gaarder was a little girl, she was fascinated by the flowers in a neighbor's simple garden. The frilly faced petunias and spiky snap dragons enchanted the 4-year-old, who pestered her mom, Gail, until she agreed to take Mindy to a nearby nursery. Mindy planted a potful of her own petunias and snap dragons.
