When Mindy Gaarder was a little girl, she was fascinated by the flowers in a neighbor's simple garden. The frilly faced petunias and spiky snap dragons enchanted the 4-year-old, who pestered her mom, Gail, until she agreed to take Mindy to a nearby nursery. Mindy planted a potful of her own petunias and snap dragons. Once, when she was fussing over her flowers, her dad, Vern, teased her by pinching open the mouth of a snapdragon and telling her it was going to bite.
It did. And ever since then, Mindy has had a powerful case of garden fever.
