Minnesota's deer herd, devastated by two brutal winters in the mid 1990s, has almost completely recovered thanks to the third consecutive mild winter, state wildlife officials said last week.
"In most areas, we've probably fully recovered," said Ed Boggess, Department of Natural Resources wildlife program leader. "The mild winter has been tremendous for deer survival and reproduction."
That likely will result in an increase in the number of antlerless permits issued to Minnesota's 450,000 deer hunters next fall, Boggess said. Wildlife officials still have to analyze productivity, harvest and age structurers of the deer herd before determining how many ...
