Elk River defenseman Paul Martin is a quiet leader - unless someone has to speak up.
"Last year we were trailing Lake of the Woods-Baudette," Elks coach Tony Sarsland said, "and, when I walked into the locker room between periods, I saw a player taking off his jersey, throwing it on the middle table and saying he is going to quit."
Sarsland later discovered the usually soft-spoken Martin had scolded that player for downgrading another teammate.
Leadership is one of many attributes of Martin, an A student, all-state football player and boy's hockey Metro Player of the Year.
