The first day the Rev. Kathleen Sukke walked into the new office of Word Alone at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, one of the first letters she saw was from the lawyer for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
On Word Alone's Web site, organizers had told potential contributors to send their checks to St. Andrew's, thus assuring that their donations would be tax exempt. However, the ELCA saw it a little differently.
The letter, written by Phillip Harris, ELCA general counsel, said, in part, " ... I must inform you that St. Andrew's Lutheran Church is misusing its tax-exempt status and putting the congregation and its contributors ...
