Whether the destination is the Galapagos Islands, Andean trails or Amazon rain forests, most visits to Ecuador begin and end in the capital city, Quito.
Ours did, too. And we found the city the Spaniards wrested from the Incas to be worth visiting in its own right, but not a place to spend a full vacation.
Starting with at least one restful day in Quito isn't a bad idea if high-altitude adventure is your plan. We never fully acclimated to elevations near 10,000 feet and higher, but we felt much better after the first 24 hours in Quito. And there was plenty to do and see.
