Without state help, some nursing homes may follow the dinosaurs into extinction, and that could cause disrupted, poor-quality care for thousands of frail people who live in them, a state agency says.
In a report to be presented to legislators today, the state Department of Human Services (DHS) suggests easing some regulations, revamping government payments to reward good results and helping some nursing homes shrink, change roles or shut down.
The switch to "performance-based contracting" - rewarding homes that offer the best quality of care and penalizing poor performers - also would result in public reports to help consumers choose good nursing homes, ...
