Set in motion by a class of fourth-graders, the monarch butterfly fluttered a bit closer to status as the Minnesota state butterfly Monday, as the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved a bill to declare it such.
Two fourth-graders from Anderson Elementary School in Mahtomedi, chosen from among their classmates to testify before the committee, offered 10 reasons why the monarch should be so honored. "If we have a state muffin, we should be able to have a state butterfly," said student Gina Bruns.
Most observers predict easy passage.
