George W. Bush and John McCain engaged in the most contentious debate of the Republican presidential campaign Tuesday, trading accusations about negative advertising and clashing over campaign-finance reform.
Locked in a close race four days before the decisive South Carolina primary, Bush and McCain tried to define their differences but got caught in bitter exchanges about their attacks on each other in recent weeks.
