In a classic Americana setting - a rural Lutheran church hall, choruses of children and middle-aged men singing patriotic standards, ringing declarations about the values of hard work, church and family - U.S. Sen. Rod Grams on Monday formally declared his candidacy for a second term.

Recalling stories from his childhood, including the time at the church school when he put glue on a classmate's seat, Grams said the lessons he learned growing up on a dairy farm near this tiny Isanti County town were universal.
