Like old soldiers, old commercial corridors never die; they just fade away. Shabby storefronts. Vacancies. Poor parking. Litter. Perceived danger. A place to drive through en route to a shopping center elsewhere.
And in the past, who cared? Except maybe businesses trapped in an aging corridor. And residents isolated in nearby aging neighborhoods.
Such a picture - however accurate, or inaccurate - is fading like Gen. MacArthur's old soldier. In the last few years, commercial corridors and their revitalization have become an official Minneapolis priority for city planning and community development.
