One of the most influential black militants of the 1960s and '70s, Eldridge Cleaver served as spokesman for the Black Panther Party, which was founded in 1966. A one-time inmate in California's tough Soledad and Folsom prisons, he wrote "Soul on Ice," which described rape as "an insurrectionary act." In 1968, Cleaver was wounded in a shootout with police. Facing criminal charges, he fled for safe havens in Algeria, Cuba and France.
