Should publishers sell the front cover?
Sports inc., the latest offering of Times Mirror Magazines, made its debut in November with an unusual concept: The weekly business magazine features an ad on its front cover.
Broadcasting, another Times Mirror product, also sells its cover, as does Editor & Publisher, a weekly for newspaper executives owned by Editor & Publishing Co. The latter has been running advertising on its cover for years, says Donald Parvin, advertising manager.
In an age when magazines must stand out in a crowded field, however, is an ad the most enticing way to lure a reader?
