Mexico City attracted 8.9 million visitors in hotel stays in 1999, representing a 12.7 percent increase over 1998. With an estimated 6 million visitors staying with family and friends, the city was host to approximately 15 million total visitors, making Mexico City the country's most popular travel destination. This was announced by Agustin Arroyo Legaspi, President of the Mexico City Tourism Authority, during Mexico's annual travel trade show, Tianguis Turistico in Acapulco last month.
