Roy Haynes is 75 going on 25. The Roxbury-born drummer, who no doubt will have plenty of family and old friends in the audience when he leads his trio at Scullers on Tuesday and Wednesday, remains a marvel midway through his eighth decade.
"I start playing, man, and I'm as young as anybody on the bandstand," Haynes said in an interview from his home on Long Island.
Haynes is one septuagenarian whose music makes clear that he's not just talking the talk. Whether performing with his trio or quartet, his ideas remain as fresh and inventive as they sounded when he was performing with Lester Young and Charlie Parker more than five decades ago.
