1/3 It was 1933. Marian Kern, a 12-year-old farm girl from the northwestern Minnesota community of Wadena, was leaving her first Minnesota State Fair when she and others in her 4H group received "the challenge of a lifetime."
"Look at these fairgrounds because maybe we'll never get back here again," the group's adviser said as they prepared for the 175-mile trip home. Stunned, Kern replied, "Give up something as wonderful as working at the fair? I'm coming back."
And she did - again and again, eventually working at more than 50 Minnesota State Fairs. She and her husband, Melvin, another 50-year fair veteran, have worked with swine and poultry ...
