1/3 Coon Rapids football coach Clayton Copple said the reason for the Cardinals' turnaround this season is simple: "We have better athletes."
The Cardinals, who were 1-8 last season, play at Blaine at 7 Friday night for a share of the Twin Cities Suburban's National Division lead. Blaine is 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the division; Coon Rapids is 4-1, 2-1 with impressive upset victories the past two weeks over Stillwater (18-16) and White Bear Lake (26-16). Both were rated among the state's top 10 teams at the time.
