1/3 Dale Jenson was always the main suspect in her daughter Jessica's death. But Michelle Swanson stood by her boyfriend for four years until the Cannon Falls man confessed in August to accidentally killing the 3-year-old in 1995.
On Tuesday, Swanson took the stand in an unusual pretrial hearing move and tearfully explained why. Until August, she had never believed Jenson could harm Jessica. Nor did she want to.
At a time when everyone - police, social-service officials, her estranged husband - seemed against her, Swanson said, Jenson was the last person she had to hang onto.
