1/3 When Gourd Woman tells the story of the woman who turned herself to stone, the listener can almost smell the sage, feel the antelope thundering across the plain and visualize a woman transforming herself to stone so she can sit on her beloved prairie forever.
"I've been hearing and telling these stories of the land since I was a child, but young people are listening differently," said Mary Louise Defender Wilson, 69, known on North Dakota's Standing Rock Reservation as Gourd Woman. "We elders need other ways to tell these stories."
