Then, rather suddenly, 10 years ago, it ended, not with a bang but with a wall tumbling down in Berlin, with a group of Polish workers who showed the solidarity and the audacity to make a fake workers' state into a real workers' state, and with a revolution in Czechoslovakia so soft and beautiful it was called "velvet."
