1/3 The Immigration and Naturalization Service has appealed a judge's recent decision to allow an undocumented Salvadoran soldier to remain in the United States legally.
The INS action continues a 17-year battle between Rene Hurtado and the agency, which has refused to grant him legal status because of newspaper accounts from the early 1980s in which he admitted taking part in killings, tortures and rapes while serving in El Salvador's notorious Treasury Police during the civil war.
Hurtado - who now goes by the name Rene Larin - and his supporters say the reports were inaccurate.
