1/3 Even avid orchid growers probably started out growing one or two plants. And, experts say, that's a good way to get started.
"Most home gardeners tend to over-do rather than under-do," said horticulturalist Lori Diaz-Lane, "and with orchids, that's dangerous."
"They [orchids] tend to thrive on benign neglect" agreed orchidist Bob Bulthuis. "If you really baby your plants, you won't have as good luck."
- Start out right: Buy healthy-looking plants in a fresh growing medium from a nursery that specializes in orchids or one you trust; get as much information as you can about the plant and its care.
