1/3 Mongsher Ly watched as crowds of Hmong celebrants pushed their way through the turnstiles at the St. Paul RiverCentre Friday, some dressed in traditional finery of brightly embroidered skirts and hats, others in all-American outfits of bell-bottomed pants, designer sweatshirts and Nike ball caps.
"It's a great gathering where we can all come together," said Ly, a volunteer at the two-day Hmong New Year celebration, which continues today in St. Paul. About 40,000 Hmong, some from as far away as the East and West coasts, are expected to attend the 22nd annual party sponsored by the Lao Family Community.
