1/3 Our trade relations with Japan go something like this: They send us cars, we send them movies. Although the boom in sexy, ultraviolent anime cartoons has made Japanese films somewhat more accessible stateside, they're still about as common as chrysanthemums in January.
Many local video stores have a broad, shallow sampling of popular Japanese films: subtitled classics by such directors as Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu, recent hits by "Beat" Takeshi, Juto Izami and others. And of course, there's always our big green friend Gojira.
