It must have been a sight. Me - red-haired and fair-skinned - sitting on handlebars while my new friend Tailor - dreadlocked and Jamaican - pedaled the two of us through downtown Negril on his bicycle. People didn't stare exactly, but they did give us some long looks. Negril may be full of tourists, but few of them get carted around on bikes by locals.
Tailor isn't his real name, but that's what people call him because of his skill with a sewing machine. Children call him "Mas Tailor" and close friends often greet him with a booming, "Sir T!" His given name, though, is Gladstone Cornelius Foster, a vestige of British colonialism.
