Sen. Paul Wellstone pulled out of the presidential race Saturday and jumped immediately into planning an active role in the impeachment trial of President Clinton, which resumes in the Senate today. Wellstone has been on national television talk shows nearly every night promoting censure of the president rather than removal from office. He spent Wednesday afternoon reviewing evidence in the case, including new material not included in the original report from independent counsel Kenneth Starr.
And Wellstone is lobbying for Senate passage of the motion he and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, will file to force the Senate's closed deliberations in the case to be opened.
