Like the mythical figures of St. Paul's Winter Carnival legend, Steven Remington walks a fine line between fire and ice.
Remington, in his second year as the carnival's executive director, must balance a century of tradition that some wish would stay frozen in time with the realization that these days, a festival has to sizzle to survive.
He wants everyone to know that King Boreas and the Vulcans are here to stay. So is the pageantry that has illustrated the struggle between the forces of winter and summer for more than 110 years.
