A woman answered the phone at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. A Minnesota reporter said: "I'm looking at the atlas, trying to find your town, without success. Is there a big city in the vicinity?"
The woman laughed mightily and then asked: "Did you ever hear of Mayberry?"
Guess what? She was not joking. Sheriff Andy's and Deputy Barney's adventures were based on characters in Mount Airy, a town in western North Carolina only a few miles from the Virginia border.
