Gymnastics judge Harlowe Beyer has watched Minnesota high school gymnastics improve by leaps and bounds for more than 30 years. It's a blessing for the sport that is about to become a curse. Beyer, 59, is retiring after this season, and there aren't enough young judges with the will and technical know-how to fill his shoes.
"We need more," Beyer said. "We have to recruit and train and have clinics. There needs to be quality judges every night a gymnast goes on the floor."
As the state's finest gymnasts participate Friday and Saturday in the Class AA and A meets at St. Paul's Roy Wilkins Auditorium, replenishing the supply of judges to replace people such ...
